Healthy Hair Icon: Ty!

1. What city can we find you twirling your hair? New York

2. Favorite food? Pizza and Sushi (but not together!)

3. Relaxed or Natural? Team Natural

4. How do you keep your hair looking fly? I let me curls do what every they please. A part of being natural was letting my hair do whatever daily.

5. What's the craziest thing you've ever done to your hair? When I was younger I went to the salon (against my mother's permission) and shaved one side of my hair like Salt and Pepa. I had watched the "Push It" video over and over again. Then I saw Mc Lyte rocking the same look. So I convinced my stylist that my mother was ok with it. I was punished for a month but I LOVED my hair and I was THE flyest girl in 8th grade. Go figure that now I'm rocking a mohawk, LOL.

6. What are your fave hair products? Miss Jessie's Curly Meringue, Jane Carter shampoo and conditioner, and raw shea butter for my scalp.

7. What is the hair product, tool, or accessory that you absolutely can not live with out? I've been using Shimmering Lights since I was a teen to brighten the grey that I've always had. I shampoo with it at least 2x a month whether my hair is permed or natural.

8. Favorite hairstyle? My mohawk was a big change for me. But it matches my sassy attitude and fearless lifestyle.

9. What's your favorite color? Purple. But I wear mostly grey and black.

10. The best season for your hair is Fall & Spring because it's less humidity in the hair and hair stays soft and flowy.

11. The worst season for your hair is Summer because it's usually 100+ outside and my hair tends to frizz up no matter what product I've used.

12. 3 words that describe your hair's personality. Wild, daring, fly

13. Where can we find you on the web?
 GorgeousInGrey.com,twitter.com/ohmyty,& facebook.com/gorgeousingrey

**************************************************************************
A gray-haired mohawk? That's definitely the business. My husband even exclaimed, "Yeah, her hair is pretty." And it's so shiny! I loved your story about shaving one side of your head like Salt-N-Pepa. Too funny! Thank you for allowing me to feature you! What do you think about Ty's hair? Leave your comments below!

Healthy Hair Icon: Jonna!

1. What city can we find you twirling your hair? I twirl my hair all over the 757 of VA, but mostly in Norfolk, VA
2. Favorite food? Seafood - fish, shrimp, scallops....just all seafood! And cheesecake!
3. Relaxed or Natural? Natural
4. How do you keep your hair looking fly? I follow the Curly Girl Method, which basically involves using sulfate-free cleansers and cone-free conditioners and styling products. Right now, I cleanse my hair & scalp once a month with a sulfate-free cleanser, and co-wash throughout the week as needed with a cone-free conditioner. I deep conditioner maybe twice a month.
5. What's the craziest thing you've ever done to your hair? I've never done anything crazy to my hair - I'm a little obsessed with my hair so I'm scared to do anything to experimental to it LOL
6. What are your fave hair products? SheaMoisture Deep Treatment Masque & Curl Enhancing Smoothie, Giovanni 50:50 Balancing Conditioner, Tresemme Naturals Nourishing Moisture Conditioner, Karen's Body Beautiful Hair Nectar & Butter Love, Taliah Waajid Proctective Mist Bodifier, EcoStyler Gel w/Argan Oil, Design Essentials Curl Cleaser
7. What is the hair product, tool, or accessory that you absolutely can not live with out? Cone-free Conditioner - because I can do pretty much everything with that
8. Favorite hairstyle? Tie between wash-n-go and twist-out
9. What's your favorite color? RED!!!!!
10. The best season for your hair is winter because less humidity, and my scalp is calmer
11. The worst season for your hair is summer because the heat causes my scalp to act a fool and just really be irritated
12. The best thing about my hair is it is one of a kind!
13. 3 words that describe your hair's personality. Fierce, Excited, Glam
14. Where can we find you on the web?

Healthy Hair Icon: Joi!

1. What city can we find you twirling your hair? Northern New Jersey, even though that's not exactly a city.

2. Favorite food? A big juicy bone in steak medium well with a side of ketchup for dipping!

3.  Relaxed or natural? Relaxed

4. How do you keep your hair looking fly? I love getting roller sets because that's when my hair looks it's best. It's fluffy, but sleek. Shiny but super light. What's your hair care regimen? My hair care regimen is pretty simple, every week I shampoo, condition, and then deep condition. My add-on treatments include pre-poo sessions, henna treatments, relaxers every 10-14 weeks with a protein treatment the week before and the week after. For daily maintenance I moisturize and seal my hair with an oil when it feels dry, so it ends up being every few days instead of actually daily.
5. What's the craziest thing you've ever done to your hair? The craziest thing I've ever done to my hair is over process it. There was a time when I would get a touch-up every 5-6 weeks and then do a 'halo' in between that time. For those of you know don't know what a halo is I'll explain. A 'halo' is when you just relax your edges. I know, I know insert gasps here!

6. What are your fave hair products?  My new huetiful hair and facial steamer, Miss Keys 10 en 1 Conditioner, Creme of Nature products, and the Arganics Relaxer System. I have a ton more but these are at the top of my list right now.

7. What is the hair product, tool, or accessory that you absolutely can not live with out? Hands down it's Coconut Oil.

8. Favorite hairstyle? Side part with a low bun ... I know it's boring but it's my signature look.

9. What's your favorite color? Tiffany Box Blue :-)

10. The best season for your hair is summer because my hair is always wet, I'm a water baby and every time I swim I co-wash and use a deep conditioner. So essentially my hair is always getting the maximum amount of moisture.

11. The worst season for your hair is winter because the moisture in my hair just runs for the hills!

12. The best thing about my hair is it's health. When I first started my healthy hair journey I had no idea that my hair was so un-healthy. The things I was doing to it and how I was handling it were terrible. Fast forward to now and it might seem like I'm a bit overzealous with my hair care but really these are just the basics for healthy hair care. Shampooing, Conditioning, and Deep Conditioning are things you HAVE to do for healthy hair, especially if your hair is chemically treated.
13. 3 words that describe your hair's personality. Healthy, Flirty, and ((looks around shyly)) SEXY!

14. Where can we find you on the web?

Yay, Joi's BSL! Congratulations! That's my ultimate hair goal, ya'll. I've been following Joi's blog for years. I consider her to be a hair blogger veteran! I remember when she first started The Anti Hair Slave years ago & back then there weren't very many hair care blogs. Her hair always looks so healthy & bouncy. She's infamous for getting doobies which I'd never heard of until I started following her. Thus, I had to get her to dish about her hair regimen. ;-) Thanks Joi for allowing me to feature you!

Embracing Ladies w/ Healthy Natural & Relaxed Hair!

Hey ladies,

I went on a Twitter rant a few weeks ago. Actually, it was more like a mini-rant. If you follow me on there, then you already know about it. In case you missed it here's the jest of what happened....It started off with my 'fed up' tweet....

Then other ladies chimed in.....

The rant was about naturals constantly bashing women with relaxed hair. I've been noticing that there are a lot of naturals that put down & condemn ladies with relaxed hair. I embrace my natural hair, but I don't have to put down relaxed hair to embrace it. It's annoying & ridiculous. I really don't understand it seeing as the goal is to have healthy hair whether it's relaxed or natural. At least that's my goal.... How you choose to wear your hair is a personal preference. I feel like I'm beating a dead horse so I'll just stop there...

So anyway, I've turned this experience into a positive one for HairGurl. Now....I've posted photos of ladies with natural & relaxed hair since I started this blog, but now I've taken it to another level. As you ladies can see, for the last few weeks I've been doing hair interviews with inspirational ladies that have healthy, beautiful relaxed & natural hair. I'm natural, but please don't mistake HairGurl for a natural hair blog. If you only want to see articles on natural hair, HairGurl is not the place for you. There are plenty of great natural hair blogs on the web. HairGurl is a healthy hair blog. I try to stress this as much as I can. I love healthy hair & ya'll know this. If you don't check out My Stand on Relaxed & Natural Hair which I originally posted about a year & a half ago. That should clear up any confusion. Ladies, lets embrace healthy hair, ok? :-) That's what I'm about. Anybody else on #teamhealthyhair? With that being said, do I have any ladies with fabulous, healthy, gorgeous, stunning relaxed or natural hair??

Send me an email at thehairgurl@yahoo.com for a chance to be featured as a Healthy Hair Icon!

P.S. Recently, my sis told me she really enjoys the Healthy Hair Icons. It really put a smile on my face. :-) I was on the phone cheesing so hard my ears were wet. What do you think of the Healthy Hair Icons?? I would love some feedback!

Healthy Hair Icon: Danielle!

1. What city can we find you twirling your hair? Philly

2. Favorite food? Quesadillas, especially ones from Mad Mex or Qdoba...yummmm!

3. Relaxed or natural? I have been natural for five years now

4. How do you keep your hair looking fly? What's your hair care regimen?  My hair style depends on my mood and my environment. If I'm going to work, you're more than likely to see me with a braidout or a bun. If I am going out with the girls, I am more than likely rocking a banana clip styled fro-hawk or a high bun. Also, I use accessories to accentuate my hair styles. Big earrings can add instant glam to a hairstyle. My regimen involves using a deep conditioning treatment weekly. I currently use Cream of Nature Argan Oil Conditioning Treatment. I love to mix my deep conditioners with oils such as olive oil, wheat germ oil, coconut oil, vitamin E oil, etc. I recently purchased Hot 6 Oil, which has a long list of oils. It makes my oil and deep conditioner mix even easier these days. Another part of my regimen is my monthly henna treatments. Henna helps to strengthen and soften my hair. Since I use braidouts more often than any other hairstyle, my regimen for that is using Shea Moisture Deep Treatment Masque as a leave-in (rather than as a deep conditioner), oil, and Kinky Curly Spiraling Spritz for hold. I have not mastered second day hair so I am left with rebraiding my hair nightly in about 6 braids to maintain this hairstyle.

5. What's the craziest thing you've ever done to your hair? Last summer I tried a semi-permanent hair color, but it did not work. That same night I put a permanent honey blonde color into my hair. It was insanely bright. Soon after I started using henna and the blonde was then replaced with a reddish color. Thank God I have not had any setbacks in this brief and insane hair experiment **crossing my fingers**!

6. What are your fave hair products? Currently, my favorite hair products are Shea Moisture's Deep Treatment Masque or Shea Moisture's Curl Enhancing Smoothie , Hot 6 Oil, Joico K-Pak Deep Penetrating Reconstructor, Giovanni Direct Leave In, Kinky Curly Curling Custard, and Kinky Curly Spiraling Spritz, Shea Butter, and Eco Styler Olive Oil Gel. I also love my wide tooth comb. I don't know where I bought it from or if I "borrowed" it from one of my friends but it has been with me since college. Oh yes...and my banana clips!

7. What is the hair product, tool, or accessory that you absolutely can not live with out? I absolutely could not live without my Shea Butter. Winter is a rough season for my hair and without Shea Butter I would probably be bald. It significantly helped me to retain moisture in those cold and dry winter months.

8. Favorite hairstyle? Definitely the braidout. Most days that I am like, wow...this braidout is thebomb.com. Then every once in a while my braidouts come out looking like an epic fail. I guess that's just life...
9. What's your favorite color? Right now...Pink. It changes often.

10. The best season for my hair is Summer because the humidity and the warmer temperatures takes my braidouts to larger volumes. I love when my hair swells in this weather. I never complain about the weather in the Summer ruining my hair style. Also, I can wash my hair, put it into a wet bun and go out the door without having to worry about getting sick.

11. The worst season for my hair is Winter because it zaps every ounce of moisture out of my hair. It takes so much patience for me to pump my hair with the moisture that it needs in the winter.

12. 3 words that describe your hair's personality. Fun, Fierce, and sometimes Fiesty...haha!
13. The best thing about my hair is its diversity. My hair is a mixture of textures. At times this annoys me, especially since I want to wear wash-n-gos soooo bad. But I realize that the mixture of textures makes my hair unique. It has its own personality. And the manipulation of hairstyles such as braidouts helps me to achieve the look that I want.

14. Where can we find you on the web? http://ellegantelle.blogspot.com/
***********************************************************************
Love the thickness of your hair!!! I was staring at the 1st pic in awe. Girl, braidouts are my fave hairstyle too! I too LOVE how my hair swells in the summer. The humidity takes it to a whole 'nother level.  #bighair Thanks for allowing me to feature you Danielle!

Healthy Hair Icon: Tiffany!

1. What city can we find you twirling your hair? Washington, DC also known as "The Chocolate City". Well, it's not so chocolate now...lol!

2. Favorite food? I am a lover of all foods…well let me not say all. I am a lover of most food; Soul food, Mexican food, Italian food, just to name a few. But what makes me a happy girl on any given day is ICE CREAM AND BIRTHDAY CAKE!!!!!! I mean, I just love me some ice cream and birthday cake. I knock over children at birthday parties and everything. Sike, just kidding! Seriously, I think I have an addiction…just ask my hubby. SMH! Lol!!!!

3. How do you keep your hair looking fly? What's your hair care regimen?
I visit my loctitian every 3-4 weeks. When I visit, my regimen includes a deep shampoo cleanse with a herbal infused conditioning rinse. Every product my loctitian use is NATURAL! No chemically altered anything. So if you turn the shampoo bottle over and read the ingredients, you'll see that you can pronounce (lol) or maybe even have the ingredients that the shampoo is composed of! The herbal conditioning rinse (my favorite part) is composed of just warm herbal tea, and essential oils such as olive oil, rosemary oil, grape seed oil, etc. I swear when she pours it on my scalp and hair, it feels like I am at the spa…lol!! I absolutely love it!

In between visits, I make sure I keep my hair moisturized, wrapped at night, and styled. I love playing around in my hair! I get a lot of my inspiration from YouTube!!

4. Relaxed or natural? Natural. It was the best decision I could have made for my hair. I started my natural journey in 2005 and decided to lock in 2009. Ever since the beginning, I have NEVER regretted my decision of giving up the "creamy crack"!!! LOL! My hair is at its best so there is no looking back for me!!
5. What’s the craziest thing you've ever done to your hair? I have not done anything crazy to my hair. I always play it safe. Not really adventurous…lol. However, I will say that when I first started to lock, I kind of just let it do its thing. I never wore scarves, turbans, or hats. I just let them be free! My hubby hated that stage but hey, it’s the process and a very liberating one at that. I learned so much about self love and gained a greater appreciation for what God naturally blessed me with.

6. What are your fave hair products? I love to use olive oil! Plain ole’, grocery store bought olive oil. I also love using Shea Butter Blends that my salon sells. They smell so good and are just as good for my hair! My favorite blends are Mandisa and Tapanga. Mandisa is a strawberry, lemon, and almond oil blend. Tapanga is a grapeseed, nettle, tangergine, rosemary, and sage blend.

7. What is the hair product, tool, or accessory that you absolutely can not live without? I L.O.V.E. using flowers as an accessory. It adds the perfect flare! I have one in almost every color! I also can’t do without my black mini rubber bands and hair pins! They are essential for the cutest hair style! I always have plenty on hand!
8. Favorite hairstyle? I have so many and I love them all! From curls to braid outs. From up-do’s to side buns. From flat twist to cornrows. From coils to just wearing it down. You name it, I love it!! It’s hard for me to narrow it down. Lately, I have been rocking a high ponytail. I am very excited about my length. It has come a long way!
9. What's your favorite color? I love blue!

10. The best season for my hair is spring because the heat of summer and the cold of winter DRIES THE CRAP OUT OF MY HAIR! Spring is the perfect balance.

11. The worst season for your hair is____ because____. Oops! See Number 8. Tehehehe!

12. 3 words that describe your hair's personality.  Healthy, Classic, and Fun!
13. The best thing about my hair is its flexibility. Most people think that locs are not flexible and that you are limited to what styles you can wear. NOT AT ALL!

14. Where can we find you on the web? I do not have a website, blog, or twitter page. However, I did document my Loc Journey of Facebook. I can send the album if anyone is interested!

***********************************************************************

Tiffany is always posting pics of her beautiful locs on Facebook & I just had to get her to dish about her hair! I'm a lover of birthday cake & ice cream too! There are certain times of the year that I crave a whole birthday cake (even though I can't eat it all!). Good to know I'm not the only one, lol. Thanks for allowing me to feature you!

Got a bangin' head of hair? Let's see it ladies! Shoot me an email at thehairgurl@yahoo.com.

Healthy Hair Icon: Gurl Nappy!

1. What city can we find you twirling your hair? Houston

2. Favorite food? Shrimp! I could eat it every day. It's so versatile & can be cooked so many different ways.

3. Relaxed or natural? I've been completely natural since July 31, 2009.

4. How do you keep your hair looking fly? What's your hair care regimen? My regimen depends on how I feel on that particular day/week. I have just incorporated deep conditioning into my regimen (more often) that is. I would usually do it once a month, but now I am trying to do it more often.(once a week) Since my hair is so thick & coarse, water is my friend. Especially in this Texas heat! Depending on what look I am going for, helps to determine what products that I use. I usually create my own deep conditioner infusing egg whites, olive oil, grapeseed oil, carrot oil, & castor oil. My fav condish at the moment (whatever that may be) and let it 'marinate' in my hair overnight & then the next day, my hair would come out very soft. The shampoo that I'm using right now is Miss Jessie's ‘Crème de la Curl’ along with her ‘Crème de la Crème’ condish. For my twists, I use the Miss Jessie’s ‘Baby Buttercream’ moisturizer.

5. What's the craziest thing you've ever done to your hair? Hmmm… I think the craziest thing that I’ve done with my hair happened back in High School. Almost every two months, I would have a different color in my hair, using rinses and permanent dye. I think I had almost every color you could think of, from black to orange.

6. What are your fave hair products? My all time fav products are Miss Jessie’s line. I haven’t tried a product that my hair hasn’t responded excellent to from that company. (My favorite is the baby butter cream) I am also in love with Carol’s Daughter, loc butter, hair milk and tui oil. The newest line that I am experimenting with now is Shea Moisture and the more I use them, the better my hair likes it. I guess I kinda consider myself a PJ.
7. What is the hair product, tool, or accessory that you absolutely can not live without? The hair product that is a 'must-have' for me is my Kinky Curly 'Knot Today'. Having that is a life saver. With all of this thick, coarse hair that so easily packs down and gets tangled, it helps a lot! As far as tools and accessories, I can't say that I have any favorites, my Denman and wide tooth comb helps a lot with my detangling processes as well though. ...

8. Favorite hairstyle? My fav thing to do with my hair is mini twists. I usually leave them up for a week or two and then take them down for a twist-out. I used to be very big on manipulating my hair almost every day, but I am learning that she (my hair) likes to be left alone to do what she does. (lol) It helps a lot with the growth of my hair as well.
9. What's your favorite color? I have two. Green and purple.

10. The best season for my hair is winter because I am able to keep my hair feeling soft after moisturizing, without the sun drying it out.

11. The worst season for my hair is summer because Houston’s summers are scorchers! The sun and humidity causes my hair to be very dry and brittle.

12. 3 words that describe your hair's personality. Kinky, Coily, & Fabulous

13. The best thing about my hair is that I am able to wear is straight for a while and wash it when I’m tired of it & it reverts back to my coils, kinks & curls. To put it in one word, it’s VERSATILE.
14. Where can we find you on the web? Youtube.com/gurlnappy and my newly created FB fan page which you can find by searching gurlnappy

*************************************************************
I LOVE your hair color! I think I may be slightly addicted to looking at hair color because lately that's become a past time of mine. Thanks for allowing me to feature you!

Healthy Hair Icon: Nakira!

1. What city can we find you twirling your hair? Baltimore, MD

2. Favorite food? I'm a Maryland girl so my favorite food has to be Maryland blue crabs! I love all seafood but crabs are dear to my heart!

3. Relaxed or natural? Natural

4. How do you keep your hair looking fly? What's your hair care regimen?
I wish I could say I was a simple girl but I'm always trying new things. My reggie changes depending on whether I'm wearing a fro or straight hair. When my hair is curly I wash with Trader Joe's Nourish Spa shampoo and conditioner. I co wash almost daily with the same conditioner, then I add Kinky Curly Knot today and detangle with my Tangle Teezer. As I'm detangling I'll add a little KK Curling Custard or Eco Styler Gel. I recently started Jojoba oil to my hair prior to the Knot Today as an effort to keep my ends moisturized and prevent them from spliting. When my hair is straight I pre poo with honey, then wash with Nexxus Humectress ultra moisturizing shampoo and conditioner or Joico's K-Pak shampoo and conditioner. Next I Apply Nioxin leave in and braid my hair in four sections. Once airdried I flat iron with Oscar Blandi's Jasmine Hair Oil serum. Whether I'm straight or curly bi weekly I deep conditon with Nexxus Emergencee.
5. What's the craziest thing you've ever done to your hair? My senior year of high school I got my hair dyed orange and yellow. My mother kept saying my hair was going to fall out and i tried my hardest to hide from her that it was shedding but it was impossible to hide the bright hair everywhere! One day in class I was playing in my hair and realized it was coming out in clumps! I had to get it cut and dyed black before graduation.

6. What are your fave hair products? Wow there are so many!!! I LOVE honey, Kinky Curly's products, and my Tangle Teezer.

7. Favorite hairstyle? I love when my hair is blown out and I love when its curly. The blow out allows me to stretch my hair and give it a break from daily wash and go's. Day to day I rarely meet ppl with a fro so I love standing out a bit ;-)
 8. What's your favorite color? Hmmm I don't really have a favorite color I love red lisptick, gold bronzer, and orange blush so either of those colors are ok with me Lol!

9. The best season for my hair is summer because I can wash and gooooo!

10. The worst season for my hair is winter because its too cold to wash and go and I get a little heat damage from blow outs.

11. 3 words that describe your hair's personality. "Who's that girl" People always ask me about my hair simply because I change it so much.
12. The best thing about my hair is its versitile and I'm not a slave to it! I love not having to worry about rain, swimming, or anything like that. I don't have to take my hair too serious anymore, I just have fun!
13. Where can we find you on the web? My blog is Styleonawhim.blogspot.com
there you can find a link to my Twitter, Facebook, and Tumblr pages. My blog is a work in progress but I try to capture everything I love in the fashion/beauty industry.

Wow! 2 snaps on the photo of you in the water. Get it girl! The shine in your hair is ridic. You're really making me wanna dye my hair back to black. Thanks so much for allowing me to feature you Nakira!
