July 4th is National Afro Day!

I rock a 'fro every day so this is nothing new to me, but is anyone else rocking a 'fro on the 4th of July?? I've been so busy that I didn't realize the 4th was in a couple of days. :o I think in honor of the 'fro I rocked a braid out last year so relaxed ladies you can join in too by rocking a big twistout or braidout! :-)

Repost: How To Do A Bangin' Braidout

*sigh* This was one of the hardest posts I've ever had to do...mainly because in the middle of posting my photos all disappeared! (mean face) But I've got it together now...I don't know what's been up with Blogger lately....Everyone always compliments me on how pretty my braidouts are so here's a step-by-step tutorial on how I do my bangin' braidouts. :-) First, I detangle my hair. I section it, apply water to each section, & just braid down. I do about 6 braids over my whole head.....I secure the ends with satin covered sponge rollers. (Sidenote: I used a random rod roller for the top braid). I apologize for the sloppiness of the braids. This is how they look when I wake up in the morning...

Start by unbraiding one of the braids. This is how it looks when I unbraid it.....Oh and before I unbraid I put extra virgin coconut oil on the ends of my hair.
Then I finger comb it for this effect. It becomes more bouncy. I do this to each section separately.
This is how one section looks after being unbraided and finger combed. I just repeat this step for each section until it looks completely wild. ;-)
I just comb through it lightly to make it BIG. I don't comb it thoroughly...I kind of pick through it. Be sure not to create any tangles. It's easy to create those with braidouts.
Voila...this is the finished product. :-)

Things to remember
  • Everyone's braidout doesn't look the same! Everyone's hair texture is unique so don't go beating yourself up if your hair doesn't look like the next chick. Love your hair. Okay?
  • The smaller the braid, the smaller the curl & wave. I like bigger waves & curls so I do bigger braids. That works for me & you'll have to find out what works for you. ;-)
  • Braidouts take practice! I've been doing them since '08 so I've gotten pretty good at them. In '07, my hair was shorter so twistouts looked better on me. Go figure. Now I'm braidouts all the way!
  • Always make sure to add some kind of a oil to the ends. I use extra virgin coconut oil. Braidouts can really dry the hair out....especially the ends.
  • Rock it! If you're wearing a bangin' braidout you MUST own it. When I wear my hair this big, I feel so fly. :D

Braidout...Fail!

My color is fading fast. I won't be re-coloring...
So here's today's braidout in a ponytail. lol #ohwell I tried, but my hair was not cooperating AT ALL. This will not be listed as one of my bangin' braidouts. I practically had to beat my hair into submission just to braid it for my braidout. I love braidouts too much not to attempt another one soon....well maybe not that soon, but you know what I mean. In other news, the doctor's appointment went fine even though I was nervous as hell. (I don't like pap smears, blood work, etc.) I'm officially 12 weeks today. :-)
I'm also using a new coconut oil which I'll be reviewing tommorrow. ;-)

My Braid Out is Growing!

Last Friday, my husband and I went to check out our favorite hip hop group, Little Brother. They were perfoming in D.C. at the Black Cat. :-) So, the night before I did my usual braid out. Btw, I'm 10 weeks post today! I'll be relaxing in about 1-2 weeks hopefully. Anyway....Ya'll! The braid out came out perfect! My hair was so BIG. I'm finally getting to the Tracee Ellis Ross-ish hair (which is my goal). I want my hair to be that big when I do a braid out. Man, I was feeling my hair on Friday. It was a great hair day. :D These pics definitely don't it any justice. I wish I'd taken more outside.....
Look! :D
And I came from this....back in '07 I rocked twist outs mostly. My hair was shorter and the twist out seemed to create better curls for my hair. Now the braid outs are the business for my hair. ;-)
This is still one of my favorite hairstyles. Scratch that. This IS my favorite hairstyle. :-)

My "No Heat" Curls!

Here's a braidout I did on my hair....I'm loving my black hair right now... :-) Here's how I created this look. 1. Washed and deep conditioned my hair 2. Applied NexFaze Protein Leave In and sealed with oil 3. I always wait until my hair is about 70-80% dry before I style for braidout. 4. I make about 8 plaits and roll them under with my satin rollers. 5. When I wake up the next morning, I apply more oil to the ends and then unravel the braids. 6. Then, I finger comb, fluff my hair, and go! Here's a pic of the rollers I use. I bought them from CVS for about $15. My braidouts usually last for about 2-3 days. Sometimes they only last that one day depending on the mood of my hair...lol. Have you tried the braidout? If not, give it a try! It's a great way to add curls without using heat! Let me know how it goes.... -K.D.
