Christmas Hair & My 50 Cent Blazer!

Pics from Christmas Day in Memphis! Khloa currently tries to eat everything she can.
The day we drove back to Houston. Just my twist out which I simply tied with my satin scarf & I fluffed it out that morning.
Been wearing this blazer like crazy....It's actually a very bright orangey red, but showing up more orange. I think I'm gonna continue wearing it a lot. I bought it in June 2010 at a thrift store in VA & I'm just NOW starting to wear it. Why I don't know...this jacket is so cute & I love how it's almost like a peplum jacket. ;-)

New Hairstyle: French Twist & Twist Out Curls!

This is the updo I rocked this weekend....and I'm still rocking it! All of these pics except for the one outside were taken in the Chevy Traverse.

Man, I love this updo. As you can see it's almost identical to the French Twist with Curls except these curls were created by a twist out not a bantu knot out. I also posted more french twist w/ curls photos on Facebook I think last week. Except this one was on a twist out. I did a video on on how to do it. Still editing it so when I'm done (should be today) I'll add the video to this post. Oh & check out our 1st Traverse video on Facebook! The hubs & I actually did the video on this day. :-)

Here's the video (finally!):

1st Time Flat Ironing My Natural Hair!

Tired face...
I'm late posting this, but if you follow me on Twitter you've already seen pics of my newly flat ironed hair! This past Friday, I flat ironed my hair in lieu of celebrating me being 8 months natural. :D I told ya'll last week that I was gonna do it...and I did! :D Boy, that was the longest night ever. I was so tired. I didn't start prepping my hair until 12:30-1am (was waiting for Khlo-Child to go to sleep) I ended up finishing around 4am (i think). I don't know if you ladies can tell, but the ends of my hair were anything BUT straight. Chile....I really should've watched a few YouTube videos on how to effectively straighten natural hair ends. It is NOT as easy as relaxed hair I'll tell you!

the edges felt wonderful & so smooth! As you can see my hair is around the length it was when I started my hair care journey.

Here's the breakdown:
1. Clarified my hair with VO5 Herbal Escapes Clarifying Shampoo
Clarifying made my scalp feel WONDERFUL! It's been way too long since I last clarified. It's great to do this before a flat iron session because it removes product buildup from the scalp & hair. Perfect for creating light, bouncy hair! :-)

2. Dc'ed with Mixed Chicks Deep Conditioner for about 2 hours. ( won a gift set back in April...)

3. Applied Aphogee Keratin & Green Tea Restructurizer & Garnier Fructis Anti-Humidity Smoothing Milk. I realize now that I should have applied either more of the Smoothing Milk or added an extra product. The Smoothing Milk gave my hair a silky feeling though.

4. Sectioned off the hair & began flat ironing with the GHD. Love this flat iron!!! Don't think I can say that enough! Remember my review?? I've written about this flat iron several times. It was just as amazing on my natural hair & made my hair feel so silky. Had I used the comb-chase method, I'm confident the entire length of my hair would have felt just as great.

After I was done flat ironing, I didn't wrap my hair. It was just too thick & the ends were curly so the wrap wouldn't have been that effective anyway. I simply wrapped my scarf around my hair & finally went to sleep. I took a shower the next day & the somewhat straight hair I had became extinct. LOL

Will show you guys the style I came up w/ in the next post!!! Very easy to do!
For a next peek of the style visit the Facebook page...It's the hairstyle in my profile pic. ;-) There's also some on Twitter...

Helmet Head turned Pompadour

Helmet head...
Pompadour

I'm back! Off we went with family to the Houston Aquarium on Saturday. Something told me before we even left the house that my hair would not hold up...and I was right! It quickly went from my side puff & bangs to a helmet head!!! My hair frizzed right up. I quickly removed some bobby pins from my hair to put it in a quick pompadour. I still love the side puff & I'll be rocking it again very soon (probably this weekend). Right now, I'm currently getting ready for the hubs basketball game tonight & I'll be rocking my signature 'fro. ;-) Off to slather my hair w/ conditioner/oil & rinse!

2nd Bantu Knot Out/Maternity Dress Remixed

Hey ladies!

As you all know, I posted my birthday outfit (the other way around outfit) last week. If you're a long time reader, you know that is something I normally don't do. I save the outfits for Ex-Thrift Store Snob (which I've been seriously neglecting) which I started last spring after falling in love with thrift stores. I went out on a whim & just decided to post the 'fit on here & I got some great feedback from you guys! Thanks so much! :-) I have to admit I was a little nervous about the reaction I would get. So a few days ago I posted on the fan page about combining HairGurl with my other blog, Ex-Thrift Store Snob. It would be so much easier. HG will not be turning into a fashion blog though. I would love to just add in my style sometimes. So anyway... The consensus on Facebook voted yes so here's my 2nd attempt to combine hair with my very inexpensive outfits...but first the hair.
This is the bantu knot out I wore for the hubs birthday on Monday. This time I used DIY Apricot Mango Extra Rich Butter on my hair after it dried....smells divine & made my hair feel so moisturized.
I pinned up one side w/ bobby pins.
Ya'll remember this dress? This is the only maternity dress I bought while being preggie. Got it from Burlington Coat Factory for $10. I actually bought this dress and my I Love My Bump shirt (for $5 from Burlington Coat Factory too). I found that I didn't like most maternity clothes so I just sized up in my regular clothes. I tied a knot into my maternity dress after getting the idea from here. :-) I love it & I think I'm gonna keep it tied like this. This is a great idea if you're looking to spice up your maxi dress and show off some leg. haha.
Although you can't see it that well, this is a diy dress that I made into a handbag last summer. I'll post a better pic in another post. I got the idea from Love Maegan. :-)
My 93 cents NYC Times Square Tangerine Creme nail polish

So...what do you ladies think??? It's too hard keeping up with HairGurl, The Leo Duo, and the Ex-Thrift Store Snob...and ya'll know HairGurl isn't going anywhere. ;-)  I won't be doing these all of the time. Just when I want to show off a outfit/diy project/accessory I got for the low. Please let me know your thoughts! Yay or nay??

Sidenote: Here's some of the about me section from ETSS to give you an idea on what I'll be posting:

Here's the deal...I started ETSS in the Spring of 2010 to document my thrifty, stylish finds in the middle of brokedome. The hubs and I moved to a smaller apartment in VA (right down the street from an amazing thrift store!) to save money & I recently stopped working full-time to pursue my dream career. Now that we've made our final move to Houston, the thrift store hunts continue. I love a good deal on clothes so it's not odd to see me shopping at Ross or Marshall's & Forever 21. Even though I love a good deal, I never really gave thrift stores a chance. I grew up going to yard sales and flea markets with my mama, but somehow I strayed away from that stuff. I would always think.... "Meh...I don't want to wear somebody's old clothes." Funny how things change. Welcome to my world of $1 belts and 50 cent blazers! You'll never want to leave. ;-)

Sidenote: This blog will document my thrift store outfits & outfits that I already own. No, I don't want to work in the fashion industry. I just want to take photos of my outfit deals . I'm extremely cheap so you may not see a lot of designer wear on here. I'm not into labels... This blog is to encourage other thrift store snobs to give thrift stores a chance. I get so tired of seeing articles that say "get this outfit for under $200." That's NOT a deal! I'm going to show you some deals....

My Birthday Hair!

My birthday was yesterday! So...I'm officially 29. :-) On my last leg before 30.... I wanted to do something different with my hair besides the usual 'fro so I tweeted late the night before that I would be rollersetting my hair. I was up at 2am doing this, but I was determined. Been trying to stretch my hair for awhile now. I washed & dc'ed as normal except for this time I dc'ed with Redken Smooth Down Butter Treat. I had a little left from purchasing it a long time ago so I decided to finish off the bottle. I bought this after Tracy recommended it. I used Mixed Chicks Leave In Conditioner to set the hair (remember I won a set a few months ago?). Then...I braided my hair and rolled it with random rollers. I chose to braid it because ya'll know I'm partial to the braid out look. This time I was going for a more curly look. Next time, I'll twist & roll.  I chose to braid it just to stretch it more.

I undid one of the bottom braids & roller....

Some of the braids were still wet when I awoke the next day (remember I was doing this at 2am). I unraveled them a little...not much though. It wasn't as 'curly' as I thought it would be. No worries! Still gotta rock it. ;-) It took me sooooo long to decide on a hairstyle. This is what I came up with. Basically, it's a side puff with a bang. I brushed my hair up, twisted the side & some of the back.

My "other way around" outfit: The top is a skirt & the bottom is a shirt.

Voila! I LOVED IT. I wish I'd thought to do this style when I was relaxed. I could've rocked this with a braidout.... For the last 6.5 months, I've just been rocking my 'fro (which I love), but now I'm going to be trying some different styles. Ya'll knew me just rocking my 'fro wouldn't last for long. I have to create hairstyles. That's just how I am. It took me awhile though because I really love rocking my 'fro, but now I'm getting a little bored so let the creative styling begin! The 'fro will forever be my go to style though. So easy & convenient! Oh & I forgot to tell you ladies...when I took my hair down last night my head was sore. : \ I blame me because like I said my natural hair is not used to hairstyles. haha The hubs relieved it with a head massage. Wish I could get those everyday!!!
