4 Things I Learned About My Natural Hair This Summer

Things I learned about my natural hair this summer:

1. There were no ill effects (breakage, etc) from me applying the Textures & Tones hair color to my hair. The dyed hair is just as healthy as the part that isn't. :D I'm gonna continue to monitor my hair...

2. I get bored easily so creating hairstyles is a MUST. I thought when I went natural I would just rock curly 'fros all willy nilly, but by August I was already ready to change it up! lol I think I'm gonna put a hairstyles tab at the top of the page as I've come up with a lot over the years. ;-)

3. My pre-poo/co-wash detangle routine is the business. I never realized how helpful this would be to my regimen.

4. Postpartum shedding doesn't last forever! #thankgod

So summer is really over??? It's always hard to say 'see you next year' to my favorite time of year. :(  This is random, but.....am I the only that believes summer should start at the beginning of June & not towards the end? Because I'm a good sport....

Welcome Fall!

**Please check out this post & tell me how we should celebrate HairGurl's 3rd Birthday!!! :D What should we do??!!**

Repost: How to Grow Your Nape aka "Kitchen"

Now that I'm natural, the same rules (except for the relaxer part) still apply. I must say my 'natural nape' looks so full & thick. It's the first thing I noticed in my latest YouTube video. Even doing all of the "right" things, it was such a struggle achieving this with my 'relaxed nape.'

(Originally posted 3/1/2010)
Have you ever wondered where the term kitchen came from? Apparently, it derives from African American women and little girls getting their hair done in the kitchen. I can vouch for this because it was in the kitchen where my mother would straighten my hair with a hot comb. She needed to be near the stove for the hot comb. My nape or kitchen was the toughest part to straighten and I had the burns to prove it. Ha! I've been growing my hair for a little over 2 years and I've learned how to grow my nape long just like the rest of my hair. Same rules-just apply it to your nape! Here are some things that are helping me grow my nape longer and stronger!
*that's a birthmark on my neck*

1. Wash the scalp & hair in your nape. This area can be easily neglected while washing your hair. Remember to wash the scalp & hair in this area to create a clean growing environment!

2. Condition that kitchen! This may seem like common sense to a lot of women, but some ladies are still not adding ANY deep conditioner to this section of the hair. It's easy to forget as you're slapping that conditioner all over your hair. Deep conditioning this area strengthens it! (especially protein conditioners *smile*)

3. Moisturize your nape DAILY. Also, seal the moisture in with some kind of oil. The nape tends to be shorter & drier that the rest of the hair so it's very important to do this. My nape is definitely a 4B texture. It's very coarse and it's drier than the rest of my hair. I have to moisturize it any time it's feeling dry or it breaks off. Simple as that. The rest of my hair is 4A. (I'll post more on hair types later.)

4. When applying a relaxer, do this area last OR try relaxing it every other relaxer. By relaxing this area last, the chemicals will only have a short amount of contact time with the hair. The longer a relaxer is in your hair, the more damaging it is. So help your nape out by doing this area last or skipping it altogether sometimes. You will definitely have a healthier nape. :-)

5. Don't add unnecessary tension to this area. No TIGHT PONYTAILS. Tension pulls the hair and this leads to the hair breaking off in that area. *raises hand* I'm was guilty of doing this in past!

6. Cover the nape with a silk or satin scarf before bed. Now I realize you may not be able to cover the entire nape, but that's okay. Just make sure you are covering the majority of it.

What tips have helped you grow your nape? It's always great to learn more. :-) Let's give our nape the attention it deserves!

Embracing Ladies w/ Healthy Natural & Relaxed Hair!

Hey ladies,

I went on a Twitter rant a few weeks ago. Actually, it was more like a mini-rant. If you follow me on there, then you already know about it. In case you missed it here's the jest of what happened....It started off with my 'fed up' tweet....

Then other ladies chimed in.....

The rant was about naturals constantly bashing women with relaxed hair. I've been noticing that there are a lot of naturals that put down & condemn ladies with relaxed hair. I embrace my natural hair, but I don't have to put down relaxed hair to embrace it. It's annoying & ridiculous. I really don't understand it seeing as the goal is to have healthy hair whether it's relaxed or natural. At least that's my goal.... How you choose to wear your hair is a personal preference. I feel like I'm beating a dead horse so I'll just stop there...

So anyway, I've turned this experience into a positive one for HairGurl. Now....I've posted photos of ladies with natural & relaxed hair since I started this blog, but now I've taken it to another level. As you ladies can see, for the last few weeks I've been doing hair interviews with inspirational ladies that have healthy, beautiful relaxed & natural hair. I'm natural, but please don't mistake HairGurl for a natural hair blog. If you only want to see articles on natural hair, HairGurl is not the place for you. There are plenty of great natural hair blogs on the web. HairGurl is a healthy hair blog. I try to stress this as much as I can. I love healthy hair & ya'll know this. If you don't check out My Stand on Relaxed & Natural Hair which I originally posted about a year & a half ago. That should clear up any confusion. Ladies, lets embrace healthy hair, ok? :-) That's what I'm about. Anybody else on #teamhealthyhair? With that being said, do I have any ladies with fabulous, healthy, gorgeous, stunning relaxed or natural hair??

Send me an email at thehairgurl@yahoo.com for a chance to be featured as a Healthy Hair Icon!

P.S. Recently, my sis told me she really enjoys the Healthy Hair Icons. It really put a smile on my face. :-) I was on the phone cheesing so hard my ears were wet. What do you think of the Healthy Hair Icons?? I would love some feedback!

To My #1 Hair Fan

My #1 hair fan is my husband Reign. He has many nicknames, but Reign is the coolest one. ;-) He always takes time out to post comments on HG (although most are random, lol). As a matter of fact, he posted the very 1st comment on HG. He's always stuck by my hair decisions & supported me. I know in some case, significant others can be just as bad as the naysayers, but not my Reign.

He's watched me go through so many adventures with my hair. I've known him for almost 11 years, but I'm mostly referring to the last 4.5 years when I got more serious about my hair. At the end of the day, I'm still his K.D. After we moved to the D.C. area I (his hometown) in '07, I held on to my weave. I would get so tickled when he said my weaves looked "glamorous". He even taught me how to sew in weaves. You see, I didn't know how to sew in weave, but I knew it had to be like actual sewing. So I bought the weave, needle, and thread & he demonstrated how to sew in the hair track. That's love! LOL. Basically, I wore weaves because I'd given up trying to grow my hair very long. I was used to it getting to a certain point & then my hair breaking off. Usually somewhere around the shoulders...

Here's me w/ a weave in the summer of '06.

I would cut the weave sometimes to make it shorter....

After a month, I thought I'd try wearing my own hair out since I'd been donning a weave (half-weave really to give that illusion of "real hair") for about 3 years. I sewed the hair in faithfully every month no matter how much I missed wearing my real hair. It felt good to wear my own hair again though. And just like that my weave stage was over.

Dec. '06 w/ no weave.

Twistout!
Bored with my hair, I colored it in June '07...

...and along came the breakage. Enough to make me cut my hair into a bob in August. By the time my birthday came along (Aug. 10th), I was on a mission to obtain & maintain healthy hair after finding sites like BHM & LHCF. I started thinking "Man, I can do this!". There were so many beautiful heads of hair on both sites...They really gave me the inspiration I needed to grow my own hair.

Since then, I've been growing my hair & taking better care of it. I've stumbled along the way & made mistakes (still making them), but that's how I learned. :-) I was scraping apl by the summer of 2010...#longback  He was the 1st person to congratulate me when I reached apl.

He even submitted a hairstyle pic last year for Hairstyle Appreciation Day. :-)

Then we moved to Houston and I found out I was preggie. That's when I wondered if this was the right time to transition to natural. I decided it was. What other time would I not be relaxing my hair for this long?? I told him my plans and he was very supportive....Shocked, but supportive. He may not have agreed, but he supported me-which is the most important thing. In my defense, I did try to 'prepare' him for the day when I would go natural wayyyy back when I started taking better care of my hair. Because of my love for big, curly hair, I knew going natural was inevitable. I just didn't know when I would have the courage to do it! So last fall I started small chopping my hair....I had to do this so I knew I couldn't back out of going natural. The small chops motivated me even more. ;-)

And then out of the blue on a random Thursday evening (Jan 20th), I big chopped! Initially, I was going to big chop much later, but hey when I cut my hair into that wack hairstyle (remember?) I knew it was time, lol.

Yep, he must love me. :-) Through all of my hair adventures, he's encourages me, listens to me rant & rave when I didn't reach a hair goal, gives me most of the counter space for my hair products, celebrates my hair achievements with me, and is my ready listening ear when I just wanna talk hair. Thank you for all you've been to me & all you continue to be. I love you Reign.

Does your significant other support your hair decisions?

Repost: My Stand On Relaxed & Natural Hair

I posted this on HairGurl in February just to clarify my stand on the whole relaxed vs. natural debate. Just wanted to let you ladies know I still feel the same way....my transitioning to natural doesn't change this. ;-) #teamhealthyhair
There's been an ongoing battle of natural vs. relaxed hair lately. Check virtually anywhere online and you will see the debate on which one is better. Before I continue let me answer that question. NEITHER ONE IS BETTER THAN THE OTHER. Here's where I come in. I want to make it clear that Hair Gurl is for the woman who strives to have HEALTHY HAIR. The long hair is an added bonus that I want. ;-) It doesn't matter if you're relaxed or natural. In addition to that, I'm growing my hair to bra strap length (bsl). This is a length that I've never been to (well not as a grown woman). I don't know what my longest length was as a child. That's a personal goal of mine. I'm relaxed, but I don't promote "relaxness" so to speak. (I think I just made up a word) To each her own. It truly is a personal preference. My goal here is to provide you with the knowledge that I've learned during my hair care journey. I'm not a professional hairstylist or cosmetologist. :-) I love healthy, luscious hair. ;-) I love to see a woman walking down the street with gorgeous hair. Whether she's rocking big pretty natural curls or a beautiful blowout, it doesn't matter. I'm the first one ooohhhing & ahhhhhing at her locks. Seriously. I'm just a lover of beautiful, healthy hair. :D That's my stand.....and I'm sticking to it. :-) Photo credit: www.ehow.com

4 Months Post! :-)

Hey ladies,

I've made it!!! I've been just waiting for that 4 month mark to get here (actually it's tommorrow). This is officially the longest I've ever stretched a relaxer. The time before this was 15 weeks last year in February & my hair looked like this! -_- So this time I was scared to see what they what my ends would even look like. At the same time, I didn't care because as you know I'm transitioning.

Transition Update

I've measured my new growth in various parts of my head & it's about 1-1.5 inches....and that's stretched! So the growth is coming along. It's crazy because I'm trying to calculate how much growth I'll get a month. That way I know when to chop off the relaxed ends. I think I'll be transitioning for 6-12 months (with emphasis on 6 & 9). I flat ironed this morning and the new growth is so curly it kind of dreads up when I flat iron. Don't know if that makes since....lol. I'm managing the textures better now. It's a must that I section my hair to moisturize & seal.

Possible Bob?
Yep....I might be cutting my hair in a bob. Not a really short bob...It would rest around my shoulders. Don't know when/if I'll be doing this. I'm gonna have to cut my relaxed ends off next year & cutting it in a bob will make it easier for me. I've already done a light trim....

Okay I'm off to finish cleaning up. I'll be posting my Thanksgiving hair on Friday! Happy Thanksgiving! :D

Roadtrip Rewind: Macy's Natural Mannequin

Look what I spotted while I was out roadtripping. A natural hair mannequin in Macy's at the Northpark Mall in Dallas! When I saw her I told my hubby, "Look, there's a natural mannequin!" I was so excited. Of course, he didn't see the big deal. Isn't she lovely? I had to snap a quick pic of her hair. I dubbed her natural because of her curls (even though you can duplicate this look on a relaxed head). ;-) Shoot I want curls like this, lol!
